Valmet: Same amount of employees, more friends

Valmet’s Tikkurila office was designed to attract employees from the global organization, regardless of their unit. “After the good location of the office, the next investment priorities were coffee and food. We didn’t want a shared policy to force people to the office — our task was to attract them there. And high‑quality coffee and food have played a major role in that,” says Teemu Heikkinen, Valmet Tikkurila’s local manager (pictured).

When choosing the coffee solution, the staff were able to vote among different options from various service providers that were tested at the office. Now Paulig PRO coffee solutions serve the coffee moments of around 800 employees at four coffee stations across different floors. “Our floor cafés have also strengthened our sense of community. Even for those who don’t naturally gravitate toward groups, it’s easier to meet others while grabbing a coffee. We are now more like one pack,” says assistant Annika Welling (pictured).

The success of the new office is reflected in Valmet’s employee satisfaction surveys as well as the increased time people spend on-site. “Our amout of employees didn’t increase, but the friends did when we moved here,” one Valmet employee commented on the impact of the new work environment.

Nexi Digital Finland

Nexi Digital Finland: Coffee is the key of events

Nexi Digital Finland is a payment system software and services provider. They value good-tasting coffee in their everyday work. “We wanted to invest in a diverse selection and a reliable Thermoplan coffee machine. When good coffee is available, you don’t need to go elsewhere to get it. Social interactions have increased tremendously thanks to this coffee machine – it has become the heart of the office. Coffee is therefore an investment in job satisfaction,” says Minna Fernelius, Office Manager.

The company organizes many different types of events, where coffee is always at the center. “At one event, we served Cold Brew iced coffee with flavored syrup and whipped cream to 60 people. We received a lot of positive feedback from this experience, and it was a cost‑effective way for us to offer something special.”

Fernelius ensures that the office has a diverse selection of hot beverages, including small roastery coffees from Robert Paulig Roastery, which even the company’s Italian leadership team enjoys when visiting the Espoo office. In addition, Bradley’s tea and Tazza hot chocolate are available. “I like that we can offer employees a variety of choices. Office attendance rates have increased significantly, and I’d say that good coffee has also played a role in that,” Fernelius notes.

Mediq: The workplace coffee chosen by employees

Healthcare solutions and service provider Mediq Suomi Oy moved to new premises in the summer of 2025. Employees were involved in the relocation process from the very beginning, and the modern facilities, central location, and great coffee now attract staff to the office more than before.

“When we started planning the move, we conducted a comprehensive employee survey to find out how we could make the new premises comfortable, functional, and appealing. Good coffee ranked very high in the responses, which is why we created the Coffee Task Force and gave them the mission to find the best coffee solution for Mediq,” says Saija Kotkas, Finance Director.

One member of the Coffee Task Force was Mari Hokkanen, Sales & Operations Coordinator, who, together with her team, had plenty of freedom in the design process. During a visit to Paulig’s coffee roastery in Vuosaari, the group was impressed not only by the variety of flavors but especially by the Thermoplan coffee machine, which produces a rich milk foam for coffee drinks using both regular milk and oat drink.
“The visit was really nice because it showed us how many different coffees and machines there are to choose from. Changing the coffee selection is possible if needed, but we’ve been extremely happy with the solution we chose. These coffee moments at work take me back to holiday vibes in Italy, where I’ve often enjoyed excellent coffee,” Hokkanen describes.

In the new office, there are two break areas, “Kuppila” and “Olkkari,” which combine new coffee stations with reused furniture from the previous office – and one shared rule: no work devices allowed.

“We have a long tradition of coffee breaks. Management has instructed that coffee should be enjoyed together. Of course, as a coffee-loving nation, Finns also drink coffee at their own desks, but in Olkkari and Kuppila you’ll hear hallway chatter and more personal conversations that weekly bulletins can’t replace,” says Hokkanen.

FI Danske Bank

At Danske Bank, coffee is a passion

Danske Bank's Finnish head office Visio is located in Pasila, Helsinki. Awarded LEED certification in 2020 for its environmental friendliness, the location is a workplace for hundreds of bankers, and its coffee stations are also important meeting places during remote working hours. When the coffee solutions were recently updated, the main focus in the selection was placed on the grade of the coffee and the ease of maintenance of the equipment.

“We traditionally have two peaks of congestion at our coffee stations, at 9:30 in the morning and at 14:00 in the afternoon,” says Hanna Koskinen, Facility Manager responsible for internal services. When the coffee machines were updated to meet current usage needs, the staff played a prominent role in the selection of the machines. Coffee stations built around the fully automatic Thermoplan Black & White coffee machine are placed on all floors of the premises and are freely available to the staff. There is also a coffee station in the lobby, which is used by both staff and customers. In addition to coffee, all stations offer Tazza hot chocolate and a selection of Bradley's teas.

At Danske Bank, the quality of the coffee is not compromised on. The staff have had their say when deciding not only on the coffee machines, but also on the grades of the coffee. "Coffee stations are important meeting places and builders of togetherness, especially during remote working periods. Although the cost pressures are high, even at the bank, coffee is one of those things on which no compromises are made." In Hanna's opinion, the details are also important: the transparent bean containers and the displayed coffee brands create an image of high-quality coffee and are thus part of the employer image of a company that values its staff.
